1940s Vintage hair

Image's from Retro Ways

I'm the kind of girl that likes quick and easy hair, I usually leave my hair to dry naturally so it waves and I occasionally put it up in a bun or milk maid braids now and then. This year many designers seem to have been inspired by 1940s rolls for their catwalk shows. I'm liking the modern take on 40s hair up, the styling is more subtle and it looks a little easier to achieve. For me this is still going to be a challenge but I think I will give it a go soon. If anyone knows any good tutorials please send me a link!

Lowie has some beautiful vintage inspired dresses in their new spring/summer collection. Above are a  few of my favourites. I discovered this UK label whilst searching for some good quality knitwear (which they specialize in) last winter. Since my initial visit to their site they seem to have expanded greatly on the dress front... and very nicely I must say. Their look book and styling is very pretty too. What do you think?

On the settling in side of things everything is going well... we're getting there bit by bit, and most boxes are now unpacked! We will be exploring London this weekend which will be recorded visually to share with you's next week. We're very excited as we have been indoors unpacking most of this week! Have a fab weekend.

Welcome and thank you to our new followers! It's great to be connecting with so many talented and stylish people here :). There has been a little lack in outfit posts due to us rushing around like a mad couple launching theatticpeople.co.uk this week. We are so pleased with the response we have had from everyone & we appreciate all your support and sweet comments. Now we've launched our new site, our next new adventure is to begin our new range of hand printed interiors products and maybe bags!

I was happily introduced to strathcona stockings through the Urban Outfitters blog a few days ago and haven't been able to get these beautiful socks out of my head! As a print designer I'm naturally drawn to patterns and colours and these floral prints tick all the boxes for me. The freshness and summery feel to their look book is so pretty and quirky at the same time. I am contemplating on buying a pair but still can't make up my mind on which colour I like best, it's definitely between the two above. They have more colour options and prints on their site, what do you think? Would be interested to know your favourite print and how you would choose to style them!

Have a great weekend all. There will be a new outfit post to follow shortly and dont forget 15% discount off all shop items to celebrate the launch of our site till next wednesday. All you need to do is type PARROTS11 into the checkout.

Ben Sandler: Perfectly Retro

How picture perfect are these photos by Paris based photographer Ben Sandler? I discovered his website a few days ago whilst searching for vintage style photographs. I love the perfect hair in place styling, the humor and seemingly dark story behind each picture. Of course the amazing vintage interiors and styling went down a treat. Very Mad Men i would say, what do you think?

Ossie Clark and Celia Birtwell Vintage dresses...

I recently came across these stunning Ossie Clark and Celia Birtwell vintage dresses for sale on the Celia Birtwell website. As a print designer myself I have always been inspired by Celia birtwell's prints which are full of fun and compliment Ossie Clarks beautiful dress shapes amazingly well. I would love to own one of these originals but shall have to stick with my Topshop pieces for now... maybe one day!

Thought these could be inspirational to many as the 70s are such a strong trend this season... The drawings next to the dresses are the original print designs... so sweet. Any other 70s  designers that inspire you? Or is anyone lucky enough to own an original Ossie Clark dress? Would love to know although I may feel rather jealous!

Apologies for being rather quiet here lately, me and Ross have had a nasty cold all week and only just starting to feel a little better. Our weekend consisted of lots of honey lemon & clove drinks, and movie watching snuggled on the couch... a nice change to do nothing for a while :)

No outfit post to share due to this, but I I'm looking forward to getting myself dressed up again soon!

ETRO Fall 2011

Love, love, love the Etro fall 2011 collection; one of my favorite designers I'm always excited to see. I was lucky enough to sell some of my own designs to this family label at the start of my career as a print designer!

The print and colourways never cease to amaze me, and the eclectic random mix of fabric and textures really draw me in to these garments. I just adore the cream dress with the large scale paisley print. Not sure if my pockets could stretch to the price of a single Etro dress, but I will surely be on the look out for a similar vintage one. Any favorites designers that stand out for you so far this season?

Must get some sleep now I have been staying up way too late this week! Sweet dreams :)

Suno Fall 2011

So NY fashion week is nearly drawing to an end. It's been a busy week for us but I've managed to look through most of the new collections coming through for Fall 2011. I find it quite hectic taking in everything all at once, so I tend to take a rough look through each day, focusing on my favorites. So far Suno has really grabbed my attention as well as Anna Sui; an all time favorite and inspiration of mine. I just love this collection! I am a print designer so the mixed prints, amazing colour palettes and embroideries just do it for me!

Below is a sneak peek of Suno's trend boards from vogue.com, a feature called "first look" where designers talk about their inspiration, and offer us a glance into their creative process.

Erin Beatty and Max Osterweis - the geniuses behind Suno describe there collection as being "inspired by old ladies" with Iris Apfel and Gitte-Lee as their muse in mind. There were lots of layered mixed prints, plaid mohair cape coats (with an English countryside accent) and amazing beaded kaftans... gorgeous!

There are still more collections for me to look through but I was too excited not to post about this one. Any favorites so far?... or any you can recommend to take a good look through? I'm looking forward to see what London fashion week brings next!

1950's Vintage Horrockses Fashions

Wow! I was really pleased to stumble across this beautiful collection of 50's style fashion pieces in the V&A online shop. These designs have been adapted from 1950's fabrics, designed for Horrockses fashions; one of the most respected ready-to-wear labels of the late 40's and 50's. The prices are pretty reasonable and the prints are so, so pretty... I'm particularly in love with the hankie and tote bag design. I have also just purchased this book from Amazon, I couldn't resist seeing more gorgeous prints, and learning some more about their history! Don't you just think these items would make a perfect gift?

Below are some 40's Horrockses designs. Thought it would be nice to show you some originals. Sourced from sheepandchic blog.

Be great to know your thoughts on V&A collection!? I know you can't beat originals but I think they have done a pretty good job. The weekend is nearly here yay!

Marimekko Spring/Summer 2011

January is one of those months when we all need a little pick me up. I have always adored Marimekko and watching this video today definitely put a big smile on my face. I'm not ready to stop winter layering, or wearing my variety of warm vintage coats yet, but seeing this collection made me feel pretty excited for spring/summer dressing.

Bright and colourful prints, pretty floral summer dresses, breton stripes and simple easy wear shapes; these are all reasons why I love this collection! To top it off the floral garden runway is just beautiful. Any particular spring/Summer collections that inspire you? Hope you all have a great weekend :)

A bit of BIBA for George...

I was surprised and excited whilst looking through a copy of  Look Magazine last week to see that Barbara Hulanicki (Iconic 60s designer and Biba legend) has created a line for George at Asda. Many designers are working with high street stores to produce fusion ranges but I am particularly looking forward to seeing this collection in the flesh. You can see Biba influences from tailored trousers to 70's- style tops, maxis and many adorable prints. All very affordable starting from just £8!

You can view the whole collection online here and it will be available in stores from the 29th Nov. My favorite pieces are the animal print bow dress and the purple printed ruffle blouse (above) what's your favorite?

Now we can all have a little bit of Biba in our wardrobe :)
